Calling all Mathematicians!
Making math count in everyday life
Mathematics covers a variety of skills a student needs to function in their daily lives. Every student in Petoskey Public Schools receives 60 minutes of math everyday. The Common Core Mathematics Curriculum expects students to be able to solve, evaluate, and explain math problems that are given to them.
The Public Schools of Petoskey is using a math curriculum called Engage New York to guide students through learning the Michigan Common Core Standards.. There are a variety of activities students participate in during daily math instruction. Students use spiraled math reviews to keep skills in all areas of math fresh. Practicing basic facts, fluency skills, and working on problem solving are critical skills for 4th graders to know. Students work in groups to remediate, practice, or expand skills in areas that interest individual students.
Mathematicians in 4th grade learn about:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking- solving problems involving adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, basic facts, recognizing patterns
Numbers and Operations in Base 10- understanding place value, adding- subtracting- multiplying- dividing multi-digit numbers
Fractions- understanding equivalent fractions, ordering, building fractions and whole numbers, comparing decimal fractions
Measurement & Data- converting measurements to different units, represent and interpret data, measuring angles, time, money, area, and perimeter
Geometry- draw and identify lines and angles, classifying shapes
Using Mathematical Practices- making sense of and persevering to solve problems, reasoning, making arguments and critiquing others' reasoning, modeling,
using appropriate tools, being precise, making use of structures, and use consistency in math reasoning
